Once described by a music magazine as possible "idiots savant who have arrived at a rollicking approximation of post-Darmstadt electronica by accident", Ollie Bown and Sam Britton (aka Icarus) have always approached electronic music studio work with an insatiably naive experimentalism: never leading with a vision for how a record should sound, but treating the studio more like a teenagers' amateur chemistry lab that might equally produce explosives, hallucinogens or goo.

This new studio album emerges after a long hiatus, with the years in between having seen the pair explore themes forged in Icarus' early years (1998-2013) with numerous other collaborators in a myriad of different ways and in as many different contexts, creating a dizzying, labyrinthine back catalogue. Much of this activity is evidenced on the Not Applicable label but is also spread further afield on labels as diverse as Temporary Residence, The Leaf Label, PAN and Schematic amongst others.

Returning to their 9th album there is a lot to discuss. The record sees Icarus resume their obsessions with excavating the edges of musical perception. Rhythms are perennially on the verge of falling over themselves, parts count different time, instruments dissolve and reform in shapeshifting orchestrations and harmonic progressions get distracted on their way to resolution. "An Ever-Growing Meridional Entertainment Transgression at the Edge of the Multiverse" is a direct nod to Icarus' deep past: as teenagers the duo obsessed over The Orb's "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld", the seminal 1990 album that more than any other influence defined their sample-based approach to electronic music, with indulgent long-form tracks that ebbed and flowed with an apparent nonchalance and aimlessness that belied the complexity of the tapestry being woven.
